Stock Factory Deflector Plates are used on all T-1, 2 & 3 VW engines. They are installed on the bottom side of the cylinders to force the cooling airflow around and through the fins. Engines assembled without Deflector Plates will most often create enough heat to burn pistons. The installation of Deflector Plates is a must on every engine job.
